VOOPTER, SKIFT TOP TRAVEL STARTUP 2019 TO WATCH
“We’re talking about new innovation, things people haven’t even thought of,” agrees Abrar Ahmad, partner at Travel Capitalist Ventures. He says that 22 travel start-ups have so far applied for funding and that decisions about funding allocation will be made within the next six months.
He qualifies this, however, by saying that: “If we have something that comes in tomorrow that makes a lot of sense then we can invest straightaway.”
“Presently there’s just a big gap. Travel companies need money, advice, and the kinds of introductions we can make,” says Ahmad.

01. MACRO TRAVEL FOCUS
Our mission is to change the travel landscape, and we wholeheartedly embrace the travel industry from inception as our sole industry to focus on and invest in.
Our focus ranges from startups in emerging markets to established companies, each with unique capital needs and opportunities to leverage.
02. TRAVEL VERTICALS
We actively monitor, strategize and discuss macro and micro level changes affecting the travel industry, conduct internal analyses, examine 3rd party reports, and regularly speak with thought leaders from companies around the world.
Coupled with the expertise a prospective investment brings to their particular vertical ensures no need to explain what a PNR, DMC, GDS, flight segment, scan charges, native apps or the like are to us. We can dive into a substantive discussion from the start.
03. INVESTMENTS IN SELECT VERTICALS
The firm has identified 35 verticals within travel to focus our investment considerations around. We’ve invested in some verticals (meta-search, content, jet charter, etc.) while monitoring others based on the geography, target audience, overall market and travel product in question.
We benefit from referrals from stakeholders within the travel and investment communities and look to make 3 to 5 investments a year.
Given our 24/7 focus on key travel verticals, we are able to quickly screen the signals from the noise and understand opportunities missed by traditional investors. We screen for traditional investment criteria (market, team, product, revenue model, growth, company history) and travel-specific criteria based on your business and revenue model, geography, and growth strategy. Lastly, we see how your management team fits our company culture and complements our portfolio companies.
05. SPECIFIC DUE DILIGENCE
With a signed term sheet, we conduct due diligence commensurate with the stage and investment considered.
Firm Partners lead all due diligence efforts following the firm’s DD checklist and hold frank and strictly confidential on-site discussions with your team on strengths, weaknesses, threats, opportunities and assumptions regarding (a) the current state of the company, product and market, and (b) what the post-investment product and company roadmap will be.
Timelines range from 2-4 weeks to 6-8 weeks for PE deals. We are thorough, and experience shows our approach leads to a successful outcome for ourselves and for the company.
A handful of times in the past 6 years, we have halted due diligence where a discrepancy has been found that could not be resolved — it is our fiduciary duty to withdraw our term sheet in these rare cases and always after management notification and discussions.
Successfully completing due diligence leads to the signing and execution of an investment agreement (or purchase agreement) complete with Closing and Funding.
06. WELCOME TO THE FAMILY
A successful investment means we are here to actively help you however we can at any time.
Do you think about travel 24/7 and where it’s going? We do, on your behalf.
Do you monitor trends and companies in markets around the world? We do, on your behalf.
Beyond our responsibility, we enjoy supplementing your team for our mutual success.
Beyond capital, our investments actively and regularly leverage our strategic advice on what to do and what to avoid, our purchasing power and vendor relationships, portfolio company offerings, our CXO contacts contacts around the world at airlines/hotels/cruises/car/tour operators/travel technology/industry trade boards/government officials, access to industry leaders and specialists, media coverage and help, and much more.
Help with strategy, media, legal, operations, HR, marketing, and business development ensures a rapid and sustainable post-investment growth curve.
